Yesterday marked a historic day in local football for Southend.
Southend City FC was founded by Terry Rice the day after he shook hands with King Charles when Southend gained city status. Since then, with an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, the club has already established a men’s and women’s team and is ambitiously working towards creating a walking football team, a transgender team, and a wheelchair team, seeking to break barriers and make football accessible to everyone.
The men’s team’s first pre-season friendly against Great Wakering Sports marked a significant milestone in their journey. Despite a loss, it was a game filled with excitement and optimism, as the brand-new side showcased some great passages of play, some promising and hard-grafting players and considering it was their first time competing together on the pitch, a commendable display against a more experienced side.

Southend City FC’s newly appointed manager, L’Heureux Menga AKA “Mengs” brings a wealth of league experience from Harlow, Witham, Grays, Dagenham & Redbridge and more, whilst assistant and coach Tina Sheikh also brings years of experience and an unparalleled passion for getting the best out of their players.
Southend City Radio caught up with Mengs, Tina and Terry on the pitch after the club’s first professional game to hear their reaction to the match and find out more about their aspirations and plans for Southend City FC.
