The Great British Beach Clean in Southend

The Great British Beach Clean in Southend

We all know that litter on our beaches doesn’t look particularly great. But keeping our local beaches clean also helps to protect the environment, marine habitats and wildlife too. With this in mind, every September thousands of people across the UK head to the coast to take part in The Great British Beach Clean, a week-long citizen science event, where hundreds of beach cleans take place up and down the UK.

Today, along with a heroic army of beach cleaning volunteers of all ages, we joined Lauren and Bo from the Marine Conservation Society at a lunchtime litter pick on Southend seafront.

We spoke to Lauren and Bo about The Great British Beach Clean, what’s involved and how this year marks the 30th year of collecting data from organised beach cleans across the UK in what has become the longest running beach litter dataset in the world. All that litter and all that information collected on beach cleans drives the Marine Conservation Society’s conservation work, helps to campaign for change, and also feeds into the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC).

To find out exactly how much litter we removed from our beach in today’s clean, to hear about some of the strangest objects found to date and how you can help to clean up our beaches too, listen to the full interview below.
